Avery School Health Advisory Council 2014-2015

May 12, 2015

At this meeting of the Avery SHAC topics discussed included:

Christus St. Michael and Genesis Prime care put on free Asthma Clinics for the students on February 18, 2015 and March 6, 2015. Thirteen students were evaluated by the Nurse and Nurse Practitioner. We had good feedback from parents and students about the clinic. Our school will be receiving a portion of a grant given by the government to schools who participated in the Asthma Clinic. This amount of money will be based upon the number of students who participated and given to the Health Department at AISD to be used for supplies or equipment.

Students were given information about job shadowing through Christus St. Michael and information about the AHEC and MASH programs.

The VSP vision program sent free vision screening vouchers and we have had a few students that have qualified and were given these vouchers to have their eyes checked. We have had several students that have gotten glasses this year due to their vision screens that were performed in the fall.

Zoila Morales from MCNA Dental came to the Avery Open House on March 16, 2015. While there she spoke with parents about assistance with finding Dentists and about Medicaid. Zoila also came to the Elementary on March 18, 2015 to teach the students about oral hygiene. She did a great job keeping the students engaged and gave each student a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. We look forward to having Zoila come again.

Spinal Screenings were done on the students,  and notes were sent home with students who will be needing vaccinations prior to the start of the next school year.

Upcoming Events and Programs:

There will be a Red River County Safe Kids Saturday on June 13th at the Clarksville fairgrounds. Flyers will be sent home with students in Elem-Middle school the last week of school.

Kristi Routon with United Healthcare would like to come a set up a booth at the meet the teacher night for the 2015-2016 school year.

We will be looking in the Cypress ECG Project or another similar program that can provide EKG’s for the student athletes. I will be getting more information and getting together with coaches to discuss this program.
