SHAC Meeting Minutes #4 2017-2018

February 20, 2018

The fourth 2017-2018 School Health Advisory Council meeting was held on Tuesday February 20, 2018 in the High School Teachers Lounge. The Avery SHAC Vision/Mission Statement was read. The minutes from the last meeting on Monday January 22, 2018 were read and included the Asthma Clinic Feb 6-7th, Project Vaccination Feb 13th, Spinal screenings in Feb, CATCH theme 4, and the Wellness Policy/Plan evaluation.

Events this semester in health included the Asthma Clinic which was held on February 6th & 7th that was put on by the Spirit of St Michaels. We had 21 students participate in the program. The students were given free inhaler spacers, care plans were written, and prescriptions were written for those students who needed them. We will be presented with a Grant Check this summer for our participation in the clinic. The money from this years Asthma Clinic will go towards paying for the EKG’s for our student athletes in the Fall semester. The DSHS put on a Project Vaccination on Tuesday February 13th. The Senior students learned about vaccinations that are needed and recommended before entering college, they were signed up for the ImmTrac lifetime registry, and qualifying seniors received their needed vaccinations for free on that date. The Spinal screenings were performed on the new 6th & 9th grade students on February 20th.

A video was shown called “Keep Flu Out of School.” This video talked about how dangerous the Flu can be and the importance in prevention with getting vaccinated. The video cam from the Texas School Nurse Newsletter.

Sue Johnson, Chris Ritchie, and Barbara Brown with the Spirit of St. Michaels attended the meeting. They presented information on the Asthma Clinic that we have participated in the past 4 years. They also gave a great presentation on Childhood Asthma. We look forward to our continued partnership with them and the Asthma Clinic.

CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) theme 5 was discussed along with the individual tasks for this theme and checklist.

The 2017-2018 School Board Recommendations were discussed and are as followed:

  1. Continue to implement the CATCH program in our school.
  2. Continue to use the current Wellness Policy and Plan.

The floor was open for discussion. The Spirit of St. Michaels gave information on free student athlete physicals that they offer. The students must be bussed to a location in Texarkana for the Physicals. We discussed different ways to advertise the Asthma Clinic in the future including newspaper, class dojo, and the school marque. We discussed the Wadley Angio Screens that we had at the school last year.

The meeting was adjourned and the next regular SHAC meeting will be held once we get back to school from summer break in the 2018-2019 school year. The minutes and recommendations for the 2017-2018 school year will be presented at an upcoming School Board Meeting.
