SHAC Meeting Minutes #3 2017-2018

January 22, 2018

The third 2017-2018 School Health Advisory Council meeting was held on Monday January 22, 2018 in the High School Teachers Lounge. The Avery SHAC Vision/Mission Statement was read. The minutes from the last meeting on Monday November 13, 2017 were read and included handwashing teaching with Elementary Students, Donna Warren and National School Lunch Day, CATCH Theme 2 & 3, and the Wellness Policy/Plan evaluation.

Upcoming this semester in health include the Asthma Clinic to be held on February 6 & 7. The grant money from the Asthma clinic will be used to pay for the Student Athlete EKG’s in the fall. February 13th the DSHS will come and put on a Project Vaccination for our senior students. Here they will learn about shots they need for college, be signed up for the Immtrac Lifetime Registry, and qualifying students will receive needed vaccines for college. Spinal screenings will start soon on the 6th and 9th grade students. Only new 6th and 9th grade students will be screened this year due to changing from 5th & 8th.

Theme 4 of the CATCH program and individual tasks were discussed. This team focuses on The Home Team- Family Matters and 1-star tasks are to CATCH students being healthy.

The Wellness Policy/Plan was evaluated, and our Policy/Plan meets all current standards and requirements.

The floor was open for discussion. We discussed the CPR training for students. This year we have begun teaching CPR in the 8th grade health class which is a requirement for all 8th graders. This will meet the state mandate that all students 7-12 be taught CPR before graduating high school. We also discussed about offering a CPR certification class to interested students. If we decide this is something that we can do it could be started as early as next school year.

The meeting was adjourned and the last 2017-2018 SHAC meeting was set for Tuesday February 20, 2018 6-7pm in the High School Teachers Lounge.
