SHAC April 25, 2016 Minutes

May 03, 2016

The Avery Student Health Advisory Council had the 4th meeting of the 2015-2016 school year on Monday April 25, 2016 at 6:00 in the high school library.

The minutes from the last meeting were read.

Avery ISD SHAC put on a health and wellness fair on Thursday April 21, 2016. There were over 150 people that attended. Discussions for possibly continuing the health fair next year. Recommendations included separating the student and community health fair and providing more children geared information and activities.

April is Autism Awareness month and a short video was shown regarding Autism.

The Coordinated School Health committee will meet soon and start developing a new wellness policy and adopt a new Coordinated School Health program.

The vision, mission statement and bylaws will be updated to include all 10 components of the school health spectrum.

An Asthma Clinic put on by Christus St. Michael and Genesis Prime care will be held on Friday May 13th.

Recommendations to the school board that will be presented at a school board meeting include-

1.       Adopting a new Wellness Policy. Implementation of an approved Coordinated School Health Program and Curriculum.

2.       Including in Policy our CPR plan for students. Students learn CPR in their High School Health Class, and if they do not take a High School Health Class they will be taught CPR by the School Nurse or other qualified personnel.

The Next SHAC meeting will be set in the Fall semester of the 2016-2017 school year.
