SHAC February 22, 2016 Minutes

April 12, 2016

The Avery Student Health Advisory Council had the 3rd meeting of the 2015-2016 school year on Monday February 22, 2016 at 6:00pm in the high school library.

The minutes from the last meeting were read.

Implementation of a Coordinated School Health Program and curriculum was discussed. Annette from The Great Body Shop presented on their program and material. The school will decide on and implement the new program for the 2016-2017 school year.

Glenda McFadden (Maximus, Texas Health Steps), Tammy Miller/Ashley Watkins (DSHS), and Christy Johnson (Superior) attended the meeting as well. They will all be attending the health fair with information booths.

The new student drug testing policy was discussed. The expanding menu for the cafeteria was discussed. The state mandated that CPR must be taught to every student at some point between MS-HS. CPR is taught in the high school health classes here at Avery, which are not required. Any student that has not been in health class and been taught cpr will participate in a non-certification cpr class lead by the school nurse. It would be a good idea to put this policy into place that cpr will be taught in health classes or by school nurse if a student has not had a health class. The reasoning to put this into a policy is so that it will remain consistent regardless of the staff teaching the classes.

Upcoming events this semester include the Avery Health fair that will be Thursday April 21, 2016 from 2-7 on Coach Cain Court. The SHAC will be putting this on. There will be an Asthma Clinic scheduled for May 3, 2016. Last year we received a $741.44 health grant after participating in the asthma clinic that will go towards starting up the new coordinated school health program.

The next meeting was set for Monday April 25, 2016 starting at 6:00 pm in the high school library. We will be discussing final recommendations to the board, and updating the Avery SHAC Mission Statement and Bylaws for the next year.
