SHAC December, 2015 Meeting Minutes

December 10, 2015

The Avery School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) had the second meeting of the 2015-2016 school year on Thursday December 3, 2015 at 3:45 in the High School Library.

Minutes from the last meeting were read.

Events this semester included allergy bands for students with peanut allergies, hearing/vision screenings, food allergy/EpiPen training for staff members, and VSP vision vouchers were sent out to qualifying students. 

Hand-washing teaching was done with elementary students with High School SHAC members assisting with the classes. The students made 3d germs and did germ coloring sheets that were displayed in the hallway during Grandparents/Thanksgiving lunch.

Tonya Wait with ESTEEM spoke at the last meeting. She talked about a program for student character development, adolescent safety, and sexual risk avoidance.

Items discussed at the last meeting included the possibility of putting on a health fair in the spring, health screenings, angio/carotid screenings, and dental screenings for students.

The Avery Wellness Policy was read and an assessment of the policy was completed by the council. A copy of the assessment was turned into the Food Services Manager and the assessment will be presented to the board at the end of the year along with the SHAC update.

  • The Health Fair for the spring was discussed. The date is set tentatively for Thursday April 21, 2016 on Coach Cain’s Court from 2:00pm-6/7:00pm.
  • Setting the date during the week day will allow for students to be able to attend during school hours and parents/community members will be able to attend in the afternoon.
  • The Spirit of St. Michaels is willing to come and do health screenings at our health fair as long as there are not any schedule conflicts.
  • Suggestions were made for other entities that may be willing to participate including hospitals, insurance agencies, community outreach, and the health department.

Glenda Mcfadden of TX Health outreach and Tammy Miller from the Texas Department of health services attended this meeting and presented information regarding funding, Immtrac registration, and Ozarka water donations. They also are willing to participate in the health fair in the spring.

The meeting was adjourned.

A small planning meeting with the High School SHAC members will be set in January and the next SHAC meeting will be set for a day in February.
