SHAC October, 2015 Meeting

November 06, 2015

The Avery School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) had the first meeting of the 2015-2016 school year on Thursday October 15, 2015 at 3:45 in the High School Library.

Minutes from the last meeting were read.

Events that occurred over the summer and prior to first meeting included:

·         Red River County Kids Safe Saturday

·         CPR training was done for required staff members

·         United Healthcare set up a booth at Meet The Teacher night

·         Cypress ECG Project/Brandon Goyne Foundation did over 48 EKG’s on our students

·         Flu Shot Clinic- over 100 flu shots were given and over 30 other vaccinations given

Upcoming Events this semester include:

·         Allergy bands for Elementary students with Peanut allergies to wear in cafeteria

·         Hearing/Vision screenings

·         Food Allergy/EpiPen training with staff members

·         Hand- washing teaching with Elementary students (High School SHAC members will be helping with teaching)

                Tonya Wait with ESTEEM was our speaker for the meeting. She talked about a program for student character development, adolescent safety, and sexual risk avoidance.

                New items discussed included the possibility of putting on a Health Fair in the spring, health screenings, angio/carotid screenings, and dental screenings for students. The next meeting for the Avery SHAC will be set tentatively for Thursday December 3, 2015 starting at 3:45 in the High School Library and one topic that will be discussed is the Avery ISD Wellness Policy.
