On Wednesday, December 10, 2008, Avery Elementary and Middle School students traveled to Maud ISD for District 22-A/East Zone UIL Academic competition. They competed against students from Detroit, James Bowie, Karnack, Leary, Maud, McLeod and Waskom. Avery won the Championship in both the Elementary Division and Junior High Division.  This was Avery’s third year in a row to win the Elementary Division, which consists of grades 2^nd through 5^th; and for the second time in three years Avery has won the Junior High Division, which consists of grades 6^th through 8^th.  Avery ISD received 1287 total points in the two divisions.  The Avery students placed as follows:
