This lesson presents an experimental approach to probability. Students will build sample spaces including tree diagrams and sketch circle graphs. Systematic strategies, hands-on experiments, and comparison of data (experimental results to theoretical probability) are developed throughout this lesson.

Nov 21-Nov 23

This lesson is written with a developmental approach to understanding measurement. Students first familiarize themselves with units by developing benchmarks for units with their own body. Then students explore measurement through hands on experiences and by determining appropriate measures and converting them. Finally, students develop knowledge of the relationships within standard units (customary and SI (metric) systems) of measurement.

Nov 24- Dec 5

This lesson is written to develop the area formulas for several different figures through an integrated approach. Students begin with investigating the perimeter and area of rectangles. Each area formula is introduced by building on the previous area formula. The progression for developing the area formulas is as follows: rectangle, parallelogram, triangle, and trapezoid. The only formal perimeter formula that will be addressed is for the rectangle.

Dec 6-Dec 9

This lesson explores the properties of circles, beginning with the development of the understanding of pi as a ratio: circumference to diameter. Then, students will formalize the use of pi in determining the circumference. Finally, students will explore the development of the area of a circle by relating it to the area of a parallelogram.

Dec 12- Dec 16

This lesson examines the representation of data through bar graphs, circle graphs, line plots, and stem and leaf plots and uses concrete and pictorial models to examine the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of data.
